「家族」の英単語を学習しよう
まずは、ベーシックな家族の単語を覚えていきましょう！
family [fˈæm(ə)li]は、ファミリーではなく「ファマリー」か「ファムリー」が近いです。
Family Tree Chart や、relationship chartと呼ばれるもので全体感をつかむといいですよ！
family tree で英単語を学習しよう
まずは、ベーシックなfamilyの英単語から紹介します。
＜上の世代＞
- grandfather ：祖父
- grandmother ：祖母
- father ：父
- mother ：母
＜同じ世代＞
- husband ：夫
- wife ：妻
- sister ：妹、姉
- brother ：弟、兄
＜下の世代＞
- child / children ：子ども
- son ：（男の）子ども
- daughter ：（女の）子ども
- grandson：（男の）孫
- granddaughter：（女の）孫
そのほかの家族の英単語
＜上の世代＞
- great-grandfather ：曾祖父、ひいおじいさん
- great-grandmother ：曾祖母、ひいおばあさん
- great-uncle ：大おじ
- great-aunt ：大おば
- uncle ：おじ
- aunt ：おば
＜同じ世代＞
- cousin ：いとこ
- cousin’s wife：いとこの妻
- cousin’s husband：いとこの夫
- siblings ：兄弟姉妹（男女問わず）
＜下の世代＞
- nephew
- niece
「義理の～」はin -lawを付け足そう
「義理の～」というときは、”in-law”をつければOKです。
- brother-in-law ：義理の弟・兄
- sister-in-law ：義理の妹・姉
- daughter-in-law：義理の娘
- son-in-law ：義理の息子
removed, greatな呼び方
ちょっとややこしい、親類の呼び方を紹介します。
とってもややこしい！first cousin once removed
いとこはcousin, first-cousinです。
では、「いとこの子供」は？
”first cousin once removed” といいます。
removed？って何？！という感じですが。。。
そのほか、removed はtwice removedと続きます。つまり、“removed”は子など、下の世代に行く、ということです。
grand, great-parent
下の世代に行くのはremoved、でした。
では、上の世代は？
“great”がつきます。祖父母はgrandfather, grandmotherですが、基本的に”great“をつけると上の世代になります。
そのため、
grandfather = father’s father
great-grandfather = father’s grandfather
great–great-grandfather = father’s great-grandfather →father’s father’s grandfather
みたいな感じです。もう頭がこんがらがっております。

run in the family
(meaning)to be a common feature in a particular family（ある特定の家族に共通する特徴）
家系、という意味で使われます。病気などで、家族に遺伝しているときなどに使われます
from father to son
(meaning) from one generation of a family to the next（ある世代から次へと）
代々、という意味です。
the wish is father to the thought
(saying) we believe a thing because we want it to be true（そうなってほしいと願っているから、そう信じること）
願望は思想の父、という意味です
at your mother’s knee
(meaning) when you were very young（若かった時）
母のひざ元で、ごく幼いときに、という意味です
（例文）I learnt these songs at my mother’s knee.（私はこの歌をごく幼いときに学んだ）
necessity is the mother of invention
(saying) a difficult new problem forces people to think of a solution to it（難しい問題は人々に解決策を考えさせる）
